ME Bank closing in on deal with Bank of Queensland, shareholders told - Sydney Morning Herald
Bank of Queensland has into a trading halt as it looks to seal a deal to fully acquire the industry superannuation fund-owned ME Bank.
Sources said while deal talks were at an advanced stage there is no guarantee it will be completed. ANZ Banking Group has also been linked in media reports with a bid for the company. Its not 100 per cent a done deal. These things take time of course, said one source briefed on the situation who could not speak publicly because the talks are confidential. Banks are somewhat more complicated than normal proprietary limited companies. But its pretty much, its very close to a done deal. Another source from a smaller fund, who could not be identified because they had signed a confidentiality agreement, said they had been asked to sell their shares to BoQ. It wasnt our initiative, the source said. Its the board that has made a decision about the future. Its pretty hard to be competitive with the big banks. A third source who could not be named because they are not authorised to speak publicly, said there was disagreement between the banks shareholders around whether to sell the asset, with smaller funds wanting to retain it and larger funds pushing to divest. The split was between larger and smaller, the source said. AusSuper has always been a bit determinative where they go and theyre the ones giving the nudge. The smaller funds have been keen to hold onto it, maybe because of the history. Im actually quite angry about it, one of the sources said. Some of these people dont seem to share the vision I suppose of actually building collective financial institutions. The difficulty here is if you dont get scale, you cant pay for the online platform that you need to have a consumer interface youre happy with. Super fund giant AustralianSuper has been leading the push to divest ME Bank in part due to concerns the boutique lender had become more hassle than it is worth. The amount of scrutiny this asset has got and the amount of money spent on reviews and legal advice is just insane. ME Bank is owned by a suite of larger industry super funds including HESTA, Cbus, Hostplus, Unisuper, AustralianSuper and smaller funds including NGS Super, TWU Super and First Super. BoQ, ME Bank, AustralianSuper and ANZ declined to comment. ‘Deeply sorry’: Defence Minister forced to explain rape allegation response - Sydney Morning Herald
Linda Reynolds says she did not pass on an allegation of sexual assault against her former staffer Brittany Higgins out of concern for her welfare and privacy.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison this week publicly rebuked Senator Reynolds for failing to tell him of the reported assault in her office. At the time this was a difficult, it was a complex and it was a highly sensitive matter, Senator Reynolds said. At all times to me, Brittanys welfare and her right to privacy were paramount. Senator Reynolds said Ms Higgins story had occasioned a wide reckoning of how women are treated in this building, it has prompted a national conversation about how we ensure women are safe in their workplace wherever that is. I welcome the review announced by the Prime Minister. My hope now is that we can address this very serious issue as a Parliament away from the politics, she said. I became aware incrementally over a period of days of Brittanys story through private conversations with her and my then-chief of staff and via reports from parliamentary authorities. Senator Reynolds said during the April 1 meeting with Ms Higgins she made it clear to Brittany that she would have my full support in whatever course of action she decided to take and she would have full access to counselling services. My chief of staff and I moved quickly to ensure that Brittany was given access to the police should she wish to make a complaint, she said. In terms of the actions taken by my then-chief of staff and by me in the days and weeks that followed Brittanys alleged assault we at all times followed the advice of the ministerial and parliamentary services and the Department of Finance as was appropriate. For my part, I am deeply sorry that Brittany felt unsupported at the time of the incident and in the months that followed, and in fact the years that followed. I am also deeply sorry that some of my actions and my handling of this matter added to Brittanys distress. Later in question time, Senator Reynolds appeared emotional trying to answer a question on behalf of Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton and his administration of security grants, and asked the Senate to take the question on notice. The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age revealed on Thursday an anonymous tip about criminal conduct in Parliament House sparked a security review last year to examine whether officials had interfered with a suspected crime scene in relation to the alleged rape. Former federal security inspector-general Vivienne Thom was called in by Senate President Scott Ryan and Speaker Tony Smith to review the explosive claims and view footage of closed-circuit television to check serious allegations against officials in the building. Senator Ryan declined to say in question time on Thursday whether he passed on the reported security breach or alleged assault to the Prime Ministers Office, saying he would consult with Mr Smith first on what he would say. Senator Ryan said no member of parliament or their staff had viewed the footage. We followed the procedures. The Federal Police requested a viewing of the footage, they saw that footage. With their agreement we continued to store the footage since that time, he said. When we received anonymous and serious allegations, we then referred them to the AFP and we then, following that, commissioned our own independent inquiry to the actions of staff in this building. Senator Ryan said he struggled to find the words, be they formal or informal, to fully express my sorrow, occasionally frustration and anger, at what has occurred in this workplace the alleged sexual assault. Its occurred on my watch as a Senator and indeed as a custodian of this place, he said. ‘Careful what you wish for’: Police boss Mick Fuller’s warning to NRL players - Sydney Morning Herald
The NSW Police Commissioner is expected to be appointed to the ARL Commission in the next 48 hours.
In reality, his appointment is considered a fait accompli. In an interview with the Herald on Thursday, Fuller said he could help stem the tide of off-field misbehaviour that has cost the game millions in sponsorship dollars in recent years. Im an expert in employment, people management, brand management and setting behavioural expectations, Fuller said. Ive brought those skills to the NSW Police Force and I think I can bring that to the NRL. There seems to be a belief in the NRL that players shouldnt be sanctioned if there is no criminal conviction. I dont believe thats the case. They are doing incredible damage to the reputation of the game. Under employment law, you can be sanctioned. It doesnt come down to a matter of reasonable doubt. If youre a plumber, a journalist, whoever, you would be sanctioned for hurting the reputation of your business. In rugby league, you have other stakeholders like the fans and sponsors. There has been much speculation about who will take the remaining position on the commission after the departure of Mark Coyne and Amanda Laing last year. There was talk last week that Coyne could make a controversial return, although chairman Peter Vlandys denied it when contacted on Monday. I dont profess to be a great oracle about the game, Fuller said. Im a long-time supporter of the game, a lifelong follower of the Dragons, but I think I can offer help in other areas. Asked if there could be a perceived conflict of interest being Police Commissioner and on the commission, Fuller said: Thats a decision for others to make. I dont think there will be. I have said to Peter I will only do the job for nothing. Anything I get paid [a directors fee of $75,000] will be given to Police Legacy. Indeed, Fuller could finally make some definitive decisions on player misbehaviour an issue the NRL has struggled to address in recent years. Head office has flagged lifting fines to $100,000, although there is scepticism about it being a deterrent. Several NRL clubs also remain angry about Broncos prop Payne Haas merely receiving a three-match ban and $50,000 fine for abusing a female police officer on a drunken night out last month. Fuller was dismayed when former NRL adviser Catharine Lumby said Haas deserved no penalty based on race. I think she has had a shocker thats a shocker of a comment to make, Fuller told 2GB at the time. Youd have to be living under a rock not to know that policing in NSW is very different to anywhere else in the world. Fuller has plenty of friends in high places. He is close to the Roosters chairman Nick Politis, Canberra coach Ricky Stuart and Nine expert commentator Phil Gould, who Fuller consulted about taking on the role. Fuller was fundamental in the relaunch of the NRL season last year in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as facilitating the Warriors to set up in Tamworth for their quarantine period. Commissioner Fuller would be a wonderful acquisition for the commission and the rugby league community in general, Gould said. Few people know how much Commissioner Fuller did for the NRL last year to get the competition back up and running, virtually saving the NRL from financial disaster. His leadership and life skills, his contacts and experience, will be a great asset to our game. I sincerely hope this happens.
